Release of Offender Larry D. Dixon (DOC #983643)

Lake County | Larry D. Dixon, 45, was released as planned today from the Miami Correctional Facility in Bunker Hill after serving his sentence in the line of duty death on January 15, 1998 of Detective Dorian David Rorex of the Gary Police Department.

Dixon pleaded guilty after entering into a plea agreement and a motion to dismiss a death penalty request was filed. On January 10, 2000, Lake Superior Judge Richard W. Maroc sentenced Dixon to 50 years in prison for murder.

Rorex was shot and killed after a brief foot pursuit of the offender, a suspected drug dealer. During his arrest, he was rendered a paraplegic after being shot several times by other officers.

Rorex had served with the department for six years and was a United States Marine Corps veteran of the Gulf War. He was survived by his 1-year-old son, fiancée, unborn child, two sisters, brother and parents.

There are currently 29 offenders awaiting trial or serving their sentences for their involvement in the line of duty deaths of 33 Indiana law enforcement officers.
