   K-9 Assuan died after participating in training exercises at the Marion Police Athletic League baseball fields at 555 East Morton Street.

   While performing routine criminal apprehension and fence jumping exercises at 10:10 pm, he missed a high-speed jump and struck his head on the top rail of an outfield fence. The K-9 Unit veterinarian was on scene and began treatment before K-9 Assuan was transported to the veterinary hospital. He never regained consciousness and died of traumatic brain injury.

   K-9 Assuan, a male 7-year-old Belgian Malinois, had served with the Marion Police Department for five years.
