K-9 Falco was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a suspect who had fled during a traffic stop.
The suspect, wanted for aggravated battery and criminal recklessness, was seen driving at Ridge Road and Grant Street.
When the stop was conducted in the 1000 block of 35th Court, he exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
While running through a backyard, the man opened fire with a handgun on K-9 Falco, killing him, and his handler, who was uninjured and survived.
The 29-year-old suspect was taken into custody and charged with felony counts of attempted murder, attempted battery, resisting law enforcement and striking a law enforcement animal.
A jury later found him not guilty of attempted murder but guilty of attempted battery, resisting law enforcement, striking a law enforcement animal and was sentenced to a total of 8½ years in prison.
K-9 Falco, a 10-year-old male Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix, had served with the Gary Police Department for eight years.
